Indian Navy swings into action, rushes 3 ships to Mozambique

The Indian Navy has decided to press its ships into service to help people affected by Cyclone Idai, which has triggered a massive disaster, causing widespread flooding and devastation in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi. Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi called it a "humanitarian disaster of great proportions", and said over 1,000 people were killed since the cyclone hit.

He also sought help from the Indian government, following which ships of First Training Squadron of Indian Navy (Sujata, Sarathi and Shardul) in the southern Indian Ocean were diverted to Port Beira, Mozambique. INS Sujata and ICGS Sarathi arrived on March 18, while INS Shardul arrived on March 19. The trio is providing all necessary support to the local administration.

The ships have since commenced liaison work with local authorities, and are working on evacuating locals affected the cyclone. There are also reports of abou 5,000 personnel marooned at Buzi near Port Beira. Safe evacuation of all affected personnel is being done.

Disembarkation of HADR stores, including food, medicines and clothing to the Mozambique defence authorities have been completed. Arrangements are in progress to send potable water. Senior officer of the first training squadron, Capt. Varun Singh, is onboard INS Sujata, and has indicated that no effort would be spared in providing humanitarian assistance.

Furthermore, Indian Navy ships are also setting up medical camps that provide food, water, blankets and other necessary relief items as required by the local authorities.
