Heinz Wilhelm Guderian, a German World War II general once said: “Whenever in future the battle is fought, armoured troops will play a decisive role.” The statement, undoubtedly, has stood the test of time.

In fact, the ‘Fire Power and Manoeuvre Exercise’ and ‘Equipment display’, held in the KK Ranges near Ahmednagar under the aegis of the Armoured Corps Centre and School (ACC&S) and the Mechanised Infantry Regimental Centre (MIRC) on January 10, 2017, was the perfect example of what Guderian meant.

The spectacular firepower demonstration showcased the mechanised forces’ capabilities, proficiency and operational preparedness for a war. The gigantic T-90 tanks, Infantry Combat Vehicles (ICVs), BMPs, Indian Air Force’s attack helicopters, and fighter aircrafts like Su-30MKI demonstrated a quick attack on a simulated enemy position.

In case of a conventional war, it is these divisions that are likely to face the bulk of action, especially on the Western front. The recent exercise showed they will not be found lacking.
