India put forward its stand on Pakistan's continued ceasefire violations, responding to allegations by Pakistan that Indian forces target civilians in the Jammu sector.

The Indian Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) Lt Gen AK Bhatt told his Pakistan counterpart Maj Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza on Friday.

This was the first unscheduled talk between the two generals since July 20. "The Indian DGMO put across the trend of increasing attempts of infiltration across the Line of Control with the active support of Pakistani forward posts impacting peace and tranquility along the LoC and also the internal security situation," the Indian Army said in a statement.

In the past one week, there have been repeated incidents of firing and shelling by Pakistani troops killing a soldier and a civilian and injuring others in separate incidents.

There have been 472 ceasefire violations along the LoC this year by Pakistan. Out of the 291 terrorists attempting to infiltrate, 50 were killed, but 80 were successful in entering Indian territory, sources said.

The Indian DGMO emphasised that no targeted firing on civilians was carried out by Indian troops. Firing by BSF troops was initiated onto armed intruders attempting to infiltrate from close proximity of Pakistani posts along the Amritsar border.

"The DGMO reiterated that the Indian Army is a professional army and reserves the right to retaliate appropriately to any incident leading to loss of life of our troop. He reaffirmed the sincerity in the efforts of the Indian Army to maintain peace and tranquility along the Line of Control provided there was a reciprocal effort from Pakistan," the Indian Army statement said.
