An Indian Army major – the main accused in the murder of another Army major’s wife – was arrested in Meerut’s Daurala area on Sunday, news agency ANI reported.

The accused, identified as Major Nikhil Handa had allegedly slit the throat of his colleague’s wife in the national capital’s Brar Square on Saturday.

Initially, the police was informed that a woman had died in an accident. Later, when they inspected the body, it was found that her throat had been slit, they said.

The body was sent to the mortuary after the formalities of the police and the forensic teams were completed.

The woman was later identified by her husband.

The accused had allegedly run a car over her face in order to make the incident appear as an accident, police said.

The woman went to the Army Base Hospital in Delhi Cantonment for physiotherapy session at 10 am and as found dead half an hour later.

The woman was dropped at Army base hospital in her husband's official vehicle by a driver, they said. Later, when he came back to pick her up, he could not find her and learnt that she did not attend her scheduled physiotherapy session, the police said.

No missing complaint was lodged; the police received a call informing them of the incident. "We have solid clues about the culprit, it is almost known. The motive behind the murder wasn't a robbery or sexual assault," Deputy Commissioner of Police (West Delhi) Vijay Kumar had said.
