Holding Union government and the Supreme Court responsible for the violence during today's Bharat bandh protest, Dalit leader and Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar’s grandson Prakash Ambedkar stated that looking at number of incidents of violence in the name of religion and castes in the country, that day is not far when India will become next Syria.

On the backdrop of Bharat Bandh called by Dalit organisations, Ambedkar held a press conference in Pune where he came down heavily on the union government.

Criticising BJP, he said, "Instead of democratic government, the ruling party is trying to bring religious government in the country and for that they have chosen the path of violence. We are not even seeing any action against those who are involved in such communal violence. Now a days, even the leaders are not leading peoples' movement but they are leading religious movements. If such violence in the name of religions and castes continues, India will become next Syria."

Speaking about today's Bharat Bandh, he said, "I do not know who had given the call of Bharat Bandh. It was given on the social media and social organisations have responded positively to the call. The call has got very good response in the northern part of the country."

"As the government is deliberately turning blind eye towards the atrocities against Dalits, the people from community are feeling unsafe. They are now thinking of taking up various ways to protect their rights and the bandh was one of the ways of showing dissent," he added.

When asked about the violence witnessed in during the bandh, he said, "The central government and the Supreme Court are responsible for this violence. There are people in the government who are speaking about changing constitution. The Supreme Court is also trying to dilute the SC/ST atrocities Act. The community is getting a feeling that one day, all our rights will be snatched away from us and we will be once again converted into slaves and therefore they are protesting."

When asked about RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's recent statement that the RSS does not believe in excluding anyone from the process of nation building, Ambedkar said, "It is the organisation of lairs. From the year 84-85 till last elections, the RSS workers were campaigning against me and they were trying to create a divide in voters. It will be better if we do not even speak about the organisation."
