India on Sunday welcomed the swearing-in of United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. The swearing-in ceremony marked an end to the nearly two-month-long political crisis that unfolded in the neighbouring island nation. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that the resolution of the political issues was a reflection of the maturity demonstrated by all political forces.

"As a close neighbour and true friend, India welcomes the resolution of the political situation in Sri Lanka. This is a reflection of the maturity demonstrated by all political forces, and also of the resilience of Sri Lankan democracy and its institutions," MEA Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said.

He said India remains committed to taking forward its people oriented development projects in Sri Lanka. "We are confident that India-Sri Lanka relations will continue to move on an upward trajectory," he said.

On October 26, Sri Lanka's President Maithripala Sirisena had sacked country's premier Wickremesinghe and was replaced by former president and staunch nationalist Mahinda Rajapaksa. The decision had led to a national crisis and the country also saw mass protests in support of Wickremesinghe.

On his part, Wickremesinghe had maintained that his sacking was illegal and fought it in the Supreme Court who ruled in his favour. Following two orders of the Supreme Court, Rajapaksa resigned on Saturday.

Wickremesinghe, 69, was sworn in on Sunday and was administered the oath of office by President Maithripala Sirisena.
