The inaugural India-US '2+2 dialogue' which was postponed by the Trump administration last month due to 'unavoidable reasons' will be held in September.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the dialogue between the foreign and defense ministers of India and the US will take place in September's first week.

"The agenda will be to develop and strengthen strategic defense cooperation and to follow-on with what had transpired during the meeting with Secretary Defence Mattis," reported ANI quoting Sitharaman.

Earlier, a report said that the venue of the meeting could be New Delhi, and National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval may also visit Washington next month to put things in motion.

The new dialogue format was agreed upon between the two sides during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Washington in June 2017.

Earlier, Swaraj and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman were scheduled to travel to the US to take part in the meeting with Mike Pompeo and Secretary of Defence James Mattis on July 6. However, after the dialogue was postponed, Swaraj and her American counterpart agreed to reschedule it at a mutually convenient time and location as soon as possible.

In a statement, US had said the postponement of the '2+2 dialogue' with India was prompted by reasons entirely unrelated to the bilateral relationship and the partnership between the two countries was a major strategic priority for the Trump Administration

The dialogue was seen as a vehicle to elevate the strategic relationship between the two countries.

According to a report, the 2+2 Summit was postponed due to American preoccupation with the crucial forthcoming summit between United States President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. Trump and Putin are set to hold a summit on July 16 in Helsinki, Finland.
