Taking the Central government’s ambitious Make In India initiative to the foreign shores, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries will co-partner with ANUGA, an international business platform for food industry, for the ANUGA exhibition to be held in Cologne, Germany, from October 7-11.

Announcing this, Minister of Food Processing Industries Harsimrat Kaur Badal said the event would provide a platform for our strengths, and opportunities to showcase them to an international audience, and that it was an honour to participate in the exhibition. Talking about the various challenges that the industry was facing, she said the ministry was ready to overcome them, which was visible in the growth of the food processing sector.

“In the last three years, we have started nine Mega Food Parks, strengthened cold chain infrastructure, implemented Kisan-SAMPADA scheme with allocation of Rs 6,000 crore and created corpus of Rs 2,000 crore with the NABARD for priority lending to the food processing industries,” she said.

Emphasising upon the need for more investment in the food processing sector, Badal said the Centre will soon clear retail giant Amazon’s proposed $500 million investment in retail of food products.

“Despite India being the world’s largest producer of vegetables and fruits, the processing level is at a dismal 10 per cent. FDI would bring new technologies, products, processes, and markets, thereby reducing the huge wastage after harvesting and transportation. There was some delay due to abolition of the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) but the Amazon proposal will be cleared soon,” she added.

The minister also recognised the importance of India showcasing its strength in Food Processing Industries by participating in international food exhibitions such as SIAL in France and ANUGA in Germany. “Food diplomacy will bridge many differences and would transform the lives of farmers,” Badal said.
