India, Spain address Mediterranean issues for combating terrorism

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has said that India and Spain discussed Mediterranean issues of mutual interest, including combating terrorism, threats to navigation security and trade.

?Mediterranean is a very important part where whatever is happening in Maghreb- the North African region and the West Asian part. It affects the security, stability and other matters in Europe, in the context of ISIS, terrorism and similar phenomena,? MEA official spokesperson Gopal Baglay said.

?Mediterranean has also been the historical link which connects this part of the Indian ocean to the parts of Red Sea, Suez Canal etc. There are number of areas related to trade security economic matters and strategy which are important, so that is why the two countries have decided to hold discussions on Mediterranean issues,? he added.

During Prime Minister Modi?s visit to Spain, both the nations underlined the ongoing conflicts in North Africa and the Middle East, posing major security threats in Europe and Asia, such as terrorism, threats to security of navigation in the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean and illegal migration.

Prime Narendra Modi and his counterpart Mariano Rajoy underscored the key role both nations play in addressing global challenges such as fight against terrorism.

?They noted that the countries of the Maghreb region and southern and eastern shores of the Mediterranean are crucial to Europe?s security and stability? They also recognized the need for promoting regional integration and constructive dialogue among the countries of the Mediterranean by supporting regional cooperation and dialogue initiatives,? the official statement read.

India and Spain signed seven agreements across multiple sectors following delegation-level talks, co-chaired by Prime Minister Modi and his Spanish counterpart Rajoy in Madrid.

Giving fresh impetus to multifarious relations between Spain and India, Prime Minister Modi and Rajoy witness exchange of seven MOUs across various fields.

Memorandum of Understandings on cooperation in Organ Transplantation, in Cyber security, on Technical Cooperation in Civil Aviation, Cooperation in Renewable Energy, Agreement on visa waiver for holders of diplomatic passports and an MoU between Foreign Service Institute and Diplomatic Academy of Spain was signed.

Prime Minister Modi was on a two-day state visit to Spain. He arrived in Madrid on Tuesday amid his four-nation tour.

He arrived in Russia yesterday to further bilateral relations between New Delhi and Moscow.
