Taking their understanding in the defence to the next level, India and South Korea (Republic of Korea) signed two MoUs (memorandum of understanding) on Friday pertaining to bilateral defence industry co-operation.

The MoUs signed on the last day of defence minister Rajnath Singh's three-day visit are aimed at the extension of mutual logistical support for the navies of both countries and furthering defence educational exchanges.

"The roadmap has listed a number of proposed areas of co-operation in sectors of Land Systems, Aero Systems, Naval Systems, R&D co-operation and collaboration in Testing, Certification and Quality Assurance," said Rajnath Singh while addressing the CEOs of Korean and Indian Defence Industries in Seoul, in the presence of Minister of Defence Acquisition and Program Administration, ROK, Wang Jung-Hong in Seoul.

"I had productive discussions with the Minister of National Defence of RoK, Mr Jeong Kyeong-Doo, during the bilateral meeting. The ongoing defence cooperation engagements have made good progress in recent years. We agreed that there was great potential to further enhance these ties," Rajnath Singh later tweeted.

The two leaders had a comprehensive review of bilateral defence co-operation and noted that defence co-operation lies at the heart of the Special Strategic Partnership between India and South Korea, said a defence ministry official.

Ongoing co-operation at a service-to-service level and prospects for enhanced co-operation between defence industries of India and Korea were also discussed apart from the exchange of views on regional and international developments of mutual interest.

Singh also invited the Korean Industry to explore the feasibility of local production of items, used in main weapon system, imported by Indian Defence PSUs.

He proposed setting up of a task force which identifies such items which are economically viable and locally produced in India resulting in the reduction of import bill.

During the visit, Singh paid homage at the National Cemetery of Korea and also visited the War Memorial where he presented a copy of the citation received by the Indian 60th Para Field Hospital for its exceptional contributions during the Korean War.
