Amidst the toughened position on Kashmir, the war of words between India and Pakistan escalated on the eve of Independence Day, with the latter resorting to provocative statements and India reacting strongly by terming them as "absurd."

Celebrating Pakistan's Independence Day on Sunday in New Delhi, its high commissioner Abdul Basit took a confrontational stand by dedicating the Day to the "independence of Kashmir."

"…We firmly believe that the sacrifices by the people of Jammu and Kashmir will not go in vain. The ongoing unrest should be ended. Pakistan will continue to extend its full diplomatic, political and moral support to the valiant people of Jammu and Kashmir till they get their right to self-determination," Basit said.

His remarks came within hours of ceasefire violations at two places in the Poonch sector by Pakistani troops after a lull of nearly four months.
This was followed by another set of provocation, with the Pakistani foreign affairs ministry sending a query through a note verbale to the Indian high commission in Islamabad to send essential commodities to J&K.

Categorically rejecting and terming the proposal as "absurd", New Delhi hit back saying that "India and others in the region have already received enough of Pakistan's trademark exports - international terrorism, cross-border infiltrators, weapons, narcotics and fake currency."

"I can only characterise its contents that propose sending supplies to the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir as absurd….We completely and categorically reject this purported communication from the Pakistan foreign ministry," MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup said.

In his concluding remarks at the all-party meet on Kashmir this Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had exposed Pakistan's role in exporting terror by giving details of arms and ammunition captured by the security agencies from 1989 till date in Jammu and Kashmir.

"Security agencies have recovered over 34,000 AK 47 rifles, over 5,000 grenade launchers, 90 light machine guns, 12,000 revolvers, three anti-tank and four anti-aircraft guns, over 350 missile launchers, over 63,000 kg explosive, including RDX, and 1 lakh grenades. More than 5,000 foreign terrorists, equivalent to 5 battalions, were killed during this period," the PM had said.

Giving a stern message to Pakistan not to meddle in India's internal affairs by eulogising terrorists as martyrs, Modi had warned the neighbour to watch its own backyard where it was raining bombs on its own citizens.

Upping the ante further, Modi even asked the external affairs ministry to "get in touch with expats from PoK, gather information from them on the pitiable condition in the region and let the global community know about it."

Responding to the PM's strong message, Pakistan suggested an exclusive dialogue with India on Kashmir, to which India reacted by saying that only a discussion on contemporary and relevant issues, like cross-border terror, were welcome.
