Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) on Friday as an observer and not a full member. To become a full member officially, India will have to sign at least 30 documents, apart from the main memorandum of obligations.

"In this summit, the process of India's accession to the SCO will start with a signature on the base document, called the memorandum of obligations … There is a schedule laid down for us to sign up the other documents that India needs to accede to. That will happen as the year goes by," said Sujata Mehta, secretary (West).

India's entry into SCO as a full member will provide it an opportunity to have extended cooperation with member- countries in defence, security and counter-terrorism.
