Speaking on the occasion of Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration in New Delhi, Congress President Sonia Gandhi launched a scathing attack on the current regime. She said that former President Indira Gandhi was always concerned with uniting the country. Explaining Indira Gandhi's ideology, Sonia said that former PM was in favour of empowering the socially backward classes.

However according to the Congress President, the rich tradition of unity in diversity in India is endangered due to rise of communal forces in the country. Sonia Gandhi said, "It is extremely important for everyone to come together and fight to safeguard the unity and integrity of our nation".

It was very clearly a dig at the ruling BJP led NDA government. Many intellectuals have protested and even given away their awards voicing against the 'growing intolerance' in the country.
