India and Russia on Saturday attempted to address the perceived dip in their relations by undertaking a comprehensive review of economic cooperation in key areas, including energy, trade and investment.

The meeting of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC) was co-chaired by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin. Deepening the special and privileged strategic partnership, Swaraj welcomed Rogozin, MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted.

"External affairs minister and Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Rogozin undertook a comprehensive review of economic cooperation in the areas of trade and investment, transport, energy, agriculture, industry and space under IRIGC-EC (framework)," Kumar said.

Rogozin later called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who noted with satisfaction the marked increase in high-level exchanges between the two countries this year. Modi also recalled his own visit to St. Petersburg in June this year for the Annual Bilateral Summit.

The deputy Russian Prime Minister also called on the Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The Russian delegation comprised of senior government officials and representatives of trade and industry.

Earlier this month, Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov visited Delhi for Russia-India-China trilateral meeting. He created a flutter here while arguing for the inclusion of Taliban in the political dialogue process in Afghanistan.

Addressing a gathering at a think-tank, he said that Russia had in the past contacted the militant group to sit down for negotiations, adding that American strategy of defeating extremism and terrorism in Afghanistan was not viable as the military method of the last 15 years had not reduced violence in the country.

"You cannot resolve the situation without having everybody on board and around the table. The government of Afghanistan, the Taliban, and those who can influence the situation, including neighbours who feel the bad influence of what is going on in Afghanistan should find a political solution," he had said.

The two nations also agreed on raising the level of the Joint Working Group on Trade and Economic Cooperation to that of Deputy Minister / Commerce Secretary level and creating a mechanism to discuss and remove barriers to trade; creation of a Working Group on Agriculture; creation of a Working Group on Pharmaceuticals; an agreement to actively promote inter-regional cooperation which has significant untapped potential for cooperation; decision to expedite implementation of the Green Corridor for exchange of pre-arrival data between Customs Administrations of the two countries
