Amidst ceasefire violations along the LoC, India and Pakistan on Wednesday announced a meeting of their foreign secretaries on August 25 to set agenda for a summit-level meeting between the prime minister, Narenedra Modi, and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharief on the sidelines of UN General Assembly summit in New York in September.

The two foreign secretaries earlier held a telephonic talk to take stock of the situation. They later decided to meet on Agusut 25 in Islamabad to look into the possibility of reviving the dialogue process. Talks between the two sides were suspended in January last year after the killing of two Indian jawans by Pakistani forces at the Line of Control. One of the jawans was beheaded by the Pakistani soldiers. India described the attack as "an act of provocation," and, following nationwide outrage, called off the peace talks between the two countries.

The date of foreign secretary-level talks was decided by prime minister Narendra Modi in consultation with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif when they met in the Indian capital on May 27. Since Modi government assumed office in New Delhi, Pakistan has violated ceasefire 19 times.
