Amid heightened diplomatic tension, India on Monday told Pakistan that it must protect Indian envoys.

According to sources, the Indian authorities told their Pakistani counterparts that the Indian diplomats were facing harassment.

‘On 19 March 2018, two officials of the High Commission went for shopping to Safa Gold Mall. They were aggressively followed by two persons in a car (Toyota Corolla) in close proximity at various locations,’ the sources said.

‘On 19 March 2018, two officials of the High Commission travelling in High Commission’s vehicle were aggressively followed while going to Super Market for shopping by two unknown persons on a motorbike,’ the sources added.

‘The website of the High Commission of India continues to be intermittently blocked. This is causing inconvenience and has affected normal functioning of the Mission,’ the Indian authorities reportedly said.

‘Such incidents of harassment, intimidation and threats to physical security of diplomats and officials are in violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961, and a threat to the security and safety of the personnel of the High Commission of India,’ the sources said.

Pakistan has been told that the safety and security of Indian High Commission, its officers, staff members and their families is the responsibility of the Government of Pakistan.

The sources said that, ‘Pakistan has been requested to immediately investigate all these incidents and direct the relevant authorities to ensure that such incidents do not recur. Results of the investigations may kindly be shared with the High Commission.’

The move comes days after Pakistan complained about similar harassment of its diplomats in New Delhi.

In a detailed statement, the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi on March 14 had said that the ‘children (of the envoys) are being harassed and intimidated by Indian agencies.’

However, New Delhi also said that the Indian diplomats have been facing difficult situations in Pakistan for a long time. But they chose to tackle it with ‘quiet and persistent diplomacy’

"Harassment is the new normal for Indian High Commission personnel in Islamabad," said the MEA.
