A one and half year old tiger was run over by a speeding train in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday morning. The accident took place at Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh near Bichia Gate railway track.

The Forest Officer GP Singh said,"Body of the tiger was recovered from railway track pillar number 159/6 near Bichia Gate. An FIR has been registered against unidentified train driver over tiger’s death." The team of the forest department had taken over body of the tiger.

“The body bears injury marks of train-hit. One of the leg was also amputated due to train run over. It seems the Tiger could not see the train while crossing over the train. A panel of doctors will perform the autopsy on Sunday to ascertain the cause of death,” said the Forest officer.

Over the last few years, the man vs wildlife confrontation has resulted in increasing numbers of death on both sides. Apart from big cats, many elephants have also been run over by trains on the same track. Several requests from the Forest Department have been raise to the Railways to disallow the movement of trains through this track which lies in between the dense forest of Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary

Even as environmentalists campaign for big cats, their future now looks grim as a record number of tigers are dying in India in recent times.

According to the data compiled by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), a body that works under the ministry of environment and forests, the country has over lost 21 Royal Bengal tigers in the first 65 days of this year and a total of over 300 died in the past four years.

India on one hand is known to support the major tiger population across the globe, on the other hand the country witnessed a tragic decrease in number of the big cats.
