"India lacks the proper definition of child trafficking and it is often confused with sex trade," said ex-DGP of Delhi and child rights activists Amod Kanth, who was speaking at a training programme on Juvenile Justice and Human Trafficking. The programme concluded on Friday at the Karai Police Academy.

Kanth said that police officials often get confused between sex trade and trafficking and thus overlook the basic needs of children.

A famous child activist and one who contributed in framing the Juvenile Justice Act, 1986, Kanth is also a founding member of Prayas, an NGO working for the rights of child across the country.

The Gujarat chapter of Prayas, known as Sneh Prayas, is active in several parts of Ahmedabad and Kutch.

Kanth was addressing a jam-packed hall of trainee police sub-inspectors, deputy superintendent of police, IPS officers on probation and child rights activists on Friday. Kanth said that there are three main aspects related to rights of children and most of the police officers are not even aware about it.

Right to survival, right to protection, right to development and right to participate are the main rights. Kanth, who was among one of the key investigators probing the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, said that kids come in maximum contact with police and they need to be sensitised about this.

Talking to DNA, VK Mall, director, Karai Police Academy, said that he wanted the officers to be sensitised about issues of children.

When they are on field, they should act more responsibly in any case related to kids. Karai Academy has been organising many such seminars since the last few months to train officers under training at the academy.
