Congress on Wednesday said as the leader of the biggest opposition party, its president Rahul Gandhi will be the natural Prime Ministerial face against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Speaking at Zee Media's India ka DNA Conclave 2019, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said, "Congress is the biggest opposition party in the country and as its president, Rahul Gandhi is the natural PM face."

On being asked if other opposition parties would accept Mr Gandhi as the PM face, Surjewala said some allies of the Congress have already accepted that other parties would do too.

When asked if the Congress has any strategy besides anti-Modi narrative, Surjewala said the opposition's fight with PM Modi is not personal.

The government's job is to give answers to the people and the opposition's duty is to give an alternative narrative, he said.

"The fight of opposition with PM Modi is not personal, the fight is against his intentions and ideology, says Surjewala. The country will only progress when everyone in the country walks together," Surjewala said.

When asked if the Congress president has found his voice, Surjewala said, "The people of this country are asking questions to PM Modi. Rahul Gandhi is only raising people's issues on farmer distress, fuel price rise, unemployment, GDP figures, growth rate, among other things."

On the allegation of dynastic politics, Surjewala said that only two of the last four Congress presidents have been from the Nehru-Gandhi family.

"After 1990, in the last 28 years a member of the Nehru-Gandhi family has not even been a minister, the last to be Prime Minister was Rajiv Gandhi. In 2014, Rahul Gandhi had taken the responsibility for the loss. Rahul Gandhi is humble and capable, he does not get flustered by losses," Mr Gandhi said.

Surjwala said that the Congress would cross 200-mark in 2019 Lok Sabha elections and predicted 225 seats for the party.

Speaking on the occasion, Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Raj Babbar, who joined Surjewala on the panel, said the Congress has presence all over the country and is only recovering since 2014.

"Congress gave a tough fight to BJP in Gujarat. Voices are being raised against PM Modi's politics. Political parties are now thinking of uniting due to Congress chief Rahul Gandhi, he has sacrificed personal and party's interest for the sake of the nation. The BJP is now scared of losing in 2019," Babbar said.

Babbar said that as far as Uttar Pradesh is concerned, the Congress' aim is that vote should not be divided in the state.
