Independence Day 2020: This scheme may feature in PM Modi's I-Day speech

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be addressing the nation on August 15, India's 74th Independence Day, from the ramparts of the Red Fort. The I-Day celebration comes amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

In his speech, PM Modi is expected to include 'One Nation One Ration Card' scheme. According to sources, the details of the scheme have been sent to the PMO. So far, a total of 24 States/UTs have been connected under One Nation One Ration Card scheme.

In the coming months, the following states will be connected under the One Nation One Ration Card scheme:

  • September 1 - Lakshadweep and Ladakh
  • October 1 - Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, and Delhi
  • December 1 - Meghalaya
  • January 1, 2021 - West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh

Various departments and ministries are working with the goal to cover the whole nation under PM Modi's One Nation One Ration Card initiative by March 2021.

With this, eligible beneficiaries would be able to get subsidised ration under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), from anywhere in the country using the same ration card.

The government implemented the One Nation One Ration Card scheme as a pilot project in four states in 2019. From January 2020, the scheme was implemented in 12 states across the country.

Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand are the 24 states where the scheme has been implemented.
