A 16-year-old gangrape survivor ended her life over alleged police inaction in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat on Saturday.

What's shocking is the fact that the local police failed to initiate any inquiry in the case despite strict orders from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

The incident took place in July, when five accused abducted the minor and gangraped her at a secluded spot. After holding her in captivity and repeatedly raping her for five days, the accused threw her back in her Kirthal village under Ramala Police Station.

The parents of the girl filed an FIR against the five accused. After her medical test, a case under Sections 376 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code was registered against the accused.

Soon, the inquiry was handed over to the Sub-Inspector Ajai Kumar but he did not initiate any action against accused who continued to roam freely issuing open threats to the girl and her parents.

After failing to get justice at local level, the gangrape survivor and her parents met Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at the Janata Darbar in Lucknow about two months ago. On her complaint, the CM Yogi had directed the Baghpat police to arrest the accused immediately.

Despite Yogi Adityanath’s directions, the Baghpat police allegedly closed the gangrape case file with a final report.

“My family is living under constant threat from the influential accused who seems to have bought over the local police,” victim’s father Gopal Sharma had told local media about two month ago.

On Friday, when the victim had gone out to the market, the accused physically assaulted her and threatened to withdraw the case or they would gangrape her again and kill family.

Unable to bear the humiliation, the victim rushed back home and told her parents about how she was threatened again by her rapists. She shut herself in her room and hanged herself from the ceiling fan.

Since Friday night, the parents had not allowed the police to take away the body for post-mortem and held dharna at their home. They agreed for cremation on Saturday afternoon when the Circle Officer Anand Kumar Pandey assured to arrest all the five accused within 24 hours.

After the suicide of the teenager, Baghpat SSP Jai Kumar has ordered an inquiry into the case.

“I am surprised over the final report. I have already issued instructions for immediate arrest of all five accused and initiate strict action against erring police officers,” said the SSP.

Earlier, in a similar case, another gangrape survivor in Meerut had committed suicide when she failed to get justice from the police.
