The national convention of the Congress Party organised in Delhi on Wednesday in the wake of demonetization was not without significance. First, a major function was organised in the absence of the Congress President Sonia Gandhi and second, Congress chose the death anniversary of late Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri for the convention.

Only Indira Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri’s photographs were put on the dais. Indira had given the slogan, "Main kehti hoon garibi hatao, aur vog kehte hain mujhe hatao" while Shastri had put forward the famous slogan "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan.” According to sources, the imagery of the two goes well with Congress' anti-demonetization drive as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would find it difficult to pin the party down on Shastri and Sonia’s absence would give Rahul ample space to occupy the public’s imagination.

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi attacked the government on the grounds that the demonetization move was a personal decision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “We didn’t do it because we felt that it would not give the desired dividends,” said Rahul. He also said that the Congress had not once interfered in the functioning of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

“Achhe din are only going to come when the Congress party comes back to power in 2019,” said Rahul. The Congress Vice President also said that the media was being constrained under the Modi regime. “Media also has the responsibility to show what people are going through because of demonetization,” said Rahul. He then took a jibe at the media. saying, "Maybe we respected the press too much."

The Congress also alleged that they wanted to organise a bigger function but could not because a bigger auditorium was not leased out to them.

Rahul called Ramdev and Bhogle homemade economists whose decision the Prime Minister enforced. In the end, Rahul also accused the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of running the government, saying that Mohan Bhagwat and Modi alone were running the government.

Congress has decided to make demonetization a major theme in the forthcoming state assembly elections. The strategy is also being deployed by the BJP which has linked demonetization with its anti-corruption drive.
