On Valentine’s Day eve when couples were preparing to warm up to their chosen one, a pair of lovebirds eloped and attempted a cold-blooded suicide. They didn’t leave anything to chance. They drank prison, brutally stabbed each other and even fancied a death by country-made pistol, but were too weak to attempt a shot at that.
The morning sun exposed the crimson field in the nearby Raipura village, the bodies of the lovebirds stilled in the grotesque backdrop. When villagers of Deewania (Dewasar) in Sardarshahar, Churu, found Santosh Punia (20) and Krishna Kumar Sharma (32) they were still breathing. They were alive.
But they had not given up on death yet.
“The man Krishna Kumar, who was conscious, mustered his last reserve of energy and threateningly waved it at the shocked spectators who were hunting for them since daybreak. They waited, stunned into silence. It was only when Kumar’s hand flopped back onto the ground, exhausted by its master’s deadly stunt, that the villagers could take them to hospital,” SHO, Bhanipura police station, Anil Moond told dna.
Both of them were reportedly unconscious when they were taken to the hospital in Sardarshahar. The doctors immediately referred them to the government hospital in Bikaner, where they presently lie, the medical staff trying to undo their suicidal mission.
According to the police, the two fled their homes on Wednesday midnight and tried taking their lives early in the morning. “Krishna Kumar was married and has two kids. The girl, however, was unmarried,” police said. Having crossed over to the next village, they chose a spot in the field where they first drank some poisonous substance they were carrying with them. They didn’t stop at that. In a brutal display of how love can abnormally twist your thinking, they then proceeded to stab each other to be doubly sure they don’t survive the attempt on their own lives, police added.
Police said, they also had a plan C ready with them but possibly couldn’t execute it. “They were carrying a country-made pistol. Either, the stabbing and poison
intake was too much for them to use the weapon, or it could be that the country-made pistols are general one-round wonders, so they deliberately didn’t fire the gun,” a policeman investigating the case said. The duo haven’t been able to give a statement yet as they are fighting for their life. The police have registered a case of suicide against both of them.
