Birbhum's Shantiniketan, known for its most famous resident Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, is in news for all the wrong reasons. The town, where thousands of foreign and Indian tourists visit every day, is caught in a controversy after a nude photoshoot, shot at a resort in Shantiniketan, went viral.
The West Bengal town’s identity begins with Rabindranath Tagore and ends with the same. Khoai in Shantiniketan has a special place among the followers of Gurudev as the Nobel Prize winning poet immortalised its forest through his poems. The reports of a nude photoshoot has upset locals who believe that it has stained the place’s reputation.
The pictures were taken at a balcony of Shakuntala, a well-known resort in the Khoai area of Shantiniketan where a large number of tourists stay.
The woman reportedly got her nude pictures clicked at the resort balcony. The photos soon went viral on social media, triggering anger among locals. They claim that the incident is a blot on the place’s culture known for Gurudev.
A village official condemned the incident and sought strict action against those behind the incited. He had seen the photos and the matter was being investigated while he urged the administration to take strict action to stop such incidents from happening in future.
Supriyo Thakur, the last descendant of the Rabindranath Tagore, also condemned the incident and sought strict action against those behind it. The administration should make strict arrangements so such incidents do not happen in the future, he said.
Reacting to the criticism that the resort had orchestrated the incident to promote itself, the owner said their establishment is doing well and they did not need to adopt such tactics. He also claimed ignorance about the identity of the culprits.
