At a time when the government is raising awareness with its 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' campaign, the girls of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Lok Sabha constituency are feeling unsafe.

The girl students of Banaras Hindu University, one of India's premier educational institute, are on warpath against molestation incidents on the campus.

The students, who have been protesting against Thursday's incident of eve-teasing, began their indefinite hinger strike on Saturday.

The anger among the students is very evident. Akansha Singh, a student of Arts Faculty, tonsured her head in protest.

She alleged that three boys molested a girl of the Bachelor of Fine Arts near Kala Bhawan on BHU campus on Thursday night. The victim cried for help and but guards posted just 20 metres away refused to come to her rescue.

The victim lodged a complaint with the hostel warden and Chief Proctor also but they refused to initiate any action in view of the Prime Minister's  two-day visit to Varanasi.

“You all keep quite till the Prime Minister’s visit was over,” was the terse reply of the Chief Proctor ON Singh on Friday, the girls said.

“Girl Students in BHU face molestation and physical assault but instead of taking action against erring male students we are being asked to shut our mouth up,” a visibly angry Akansha said.

Several attempts by the police, district and BHU administration failed to resolve the issue.

“We won't end our hunger strike till Vice-Chancellor Dr GC Tripathi comes and meet us and give us security assurance,” Rashmi, another BFA student, said.

Meanhile, bowing to increaisng pressure form girl students, Chief Proctor Singh said, “V-C holds a dignified office and girl students may come to his office to meet him.”

BFA students allege that male students come to their hostels and make lewd remarks. They say that “when we protest and complain, they threaten to rape us.”

“We had lodged several complaints in this regard in the past but instead of taking action we are advised not to leave hostels after 6 pm. What kind of freedom do we have in the BHU,” Pallavi, another BFA student, asked.
