A jilted lover set her 16-year-old girlfriend on fire to take revenge when her father refused to allow their marriage in Hasanpur of Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district on Saturday. The victim was admitted with 70 per cent burn injuries in the district hospital and later shifted to Delhi when her condition deteriorated.

On a complaint by victim’s father, the police have arrested the accused Raza (20), a resident of Lal Mosque area, and registered a case under Section 308 of the IPC at the Hasanpur Police Station. “The accused barged into victim’s house on Friday when no one was home. He poured kerosene and set her ablaze,” SHP Devendra Sharma said.

After committing the crime, Raza fled from the house. On hearing the victims’ shrieks and call for help, neighbours rushed to house only to find her in flames. “We somehow managed to douse the flames and rushed her to the hospital and informed her parents,” said Saif, a resident of the same area.

The victim’s father told the police that Raza had threatened him to marry his daughter with him or face the consequences. A few days back, he had abducted her when she had gone out to the market but was rescued by the family members and brought her home.

“My daughter was alone on Friday when Raza carrying a can of kerosene forced his entry into house and set her on fire to take revenge from me for not marrying her with him,” charged the father.

The victim suffered serious burn injuries. “She was shifted to a Delhi hospital when her condition deteriorated on Saturday evening.  We are waiting to take her statement once her condition improves,” said the SHO.
