It was quite a day for Piyush Aggrawal. The 16-year-old was among the 120 students of Shaheed Hemu Kalani Sarvodaya Vidyalaya in Lajpat Nagar who got once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to interact with the Indian Navy officials on Monday.

"I was thrilled. I had seen the Naval life only in movies, but now I know that it is so much more than that. It is full of adventure and enthusiasm, but there are new challenges every day. We got to know about a lot of things for the first time," the Class XII student said.

As a part of the Navy Week celebrations, commemorating India's glorious victory on Pakistan in 1971, three Indian Navy officers visited the Delhi government-run school to interact with the students.

"In an attempt to create awareness among students about several career opportunities in the Indian Navy, it was decided that the officers would visit some schools and interact with them," said an officer, requesting anonymity.

The interaction included a presentation, short film screening and a question-answer round. "We were shown short films on multifarious functions of the Indian navy. The day-to-day challenges and adventures they face in real life and the sense of dignity attached to this profession," said another Class XII student, Shrey Bansal, adding that he now envisaged a career as a doctor in the Navy.

The school staffers were even more excited to be a part of the programme, expressing pride that their's was the first school to be selected by the Navy for the initiative. "We were really excited after we received a letter from the Ministry of Defence in August this year. We made all the arrangements to make the interaction a lifetime experience for our students," said school principal BK Sharma.

At the beginning of the session, the officers asked how many of the present students wanted a career with the Indian Navy. "None of them raised their hands," said Sharma, adding that when the question was repeated at the end of the session, more than 50 students raised their hands.
