In view of the increasing instances of drug and sexual abuse, the Turbhe MIDC police, along with HEART (Helping to Educate, Associate, Rehabilitate & Teach) Foundation, opened the free counselling cell for such victims on December 5. This is the first police station in Navi Mumbai to open such a cell.

"Several cases of drug abuse and sexual abuse have been reported to us in the past couple of months. However, we cannot get rid of this menace just by registering a case and arresting the criminals. So, this cell has been opened for counselling the victims so that they can start a new phase of their lives," said Shahaji Umap, deputy commissioner of police (zone 1).

More than 100 youths from various places of Navi Mumbai took part in the seminar where the senior police officers and members of the foundation explained the evil effects of drug abuse. "We feel encouraged when 15 youths raised their hands and promised to give up drugs and other tobacco products. We will now counsel as many victims of drug and sexual abuse as we can through this cell," said Dr Jayakar Ellis, founder of HEART.

"School children, nowadays, suffer from various problems and lot of pressure is put on them. Right from scoring good marks in exams to appearing brave and 'cool' before their classmates, they have to face a lot of competition. This pressure gradually pushes them to take to drugs," he said.

HEART Foundation, along with Navi Mumbai police, has also launched "PACT" (Prevention of Abuse of Children & Teens) through which they would be going around different corporation and private schools to spread awareness about the menace.

Vivek Mashal, assistant commissioner of police said, "To have a meaningful life, we need to have good health. If we use drugs and other intoxicating substances, it affects our body extremely and to such an extent that we will never be able to enjoy our life completely. This is a message I want to convey to every youth in Navi Mumbai."
