The meeting on March 6 is being held under the campaign National Initiative for Safe Sound (NISS).
In what could prove to be a shot in the arm for movement against noise pollution, Indian Medical Association (IMA) — that has partnered with the Mumbai-based NGO Awaaz Foundation, which is leading the anti-noise pollution campaign — will be holding a meeting next week to chart out an action plan at national level to tackle noise pollution.
The meeting on March 6 is being held under the campaign National Initiative for Safe Sound (NISS) that was started in Kerala by the IMA-Kerala and The Association of Otolaryngologists of India, Kerala.
Sumaira Abdulali, founder of Awaaz Foundation, said that it was extremely essential to bring in the health aspect while taking on noise pollution as while people are quite aware about issues related to eyes and dental problem but they usually ignore the "health of their ears".
"We are glad that through IMA we now have several eminent and well-known medical practitioners who will be raising the issue of noise pollution and its implication on the human health. The formal decision to take this issue up collectively at national level was taken in the meeting at Chennai held in January and now in this important second meeting there are plans to come up with a detailed action plan," she said, adding that they will be carrying out awareness along with IMA under their recently initiated campaign-Get Well Soon Mumbai.
Abdulali, who will be attending the meeting in Delhi, added that there was a need to figure out policies and its implementation and as now IMA is taking up this issue we can start a mass awareness programmes.
"People take the advice of doctor's seriously and hence as part of this collaboration we want to have several important drives along with IMA in different localities, schools, colleges as well as corporate offices and include the Government authorities so that we start taking the effects of noise pollution on our health more seriously," she said.
Speaking to dna, Dr C John Panicker, National Convenor for National Initiative for Safe Sound (NISS) from Kerla who is an ENT surgeon for past 40 years shared that noise pollution happens to be the number one reason for permanent hearing loss as well as other health complications including heart-related ailments, stress, acidity and several other complications and hence there was an urgent need for creating awareness as well as seeking stricter laws for noise pollution and its effective implementation from the regulatory body.
