Should IITs and IISc, Bangalore centralize counselling and admission process for MTech and PhD programmes similar to the undergraduate courses? This crucial topic will be discussed by the IIT council  on August 21st. The panel will discuss a proposal for counselling and admissions process for the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) to inline it with JEE advance in IITs and IISc, Bangalore.

Currently, GATE is conducted by IITs and IISc in rotation and once the results are declared the candidate has to go through a round of test/interview by each institute. In such case the potential candidates has to give tests amnd interviews on the same day in various institutes. At times candidates also give up their choice of seats in some institutes. Keeping this inconvienience of the students in it is proposed to centralise the admission and counselling process. The students apart from the financial duress and stress to run from one institute to other are also deprived of the seats in good institutes despite having good ranking in GATE. Hence, a centralized admission process is being proposed in IIT council meet.

The council in their meeting is also going to discuss the proposal for setting up a Centre for Rural Development and Technology (CRDT) at all IITs. Another agenda of the meeting is to form a committee to suggest measures for reforms of the JEE (advanced) exam. According to reports by TOI, the council is also going to mull over a proposal for an action plan on joint rescruitment of foreign faculty by the IITs.

Another agenda of the meeting in regards to GATE exam is to form a committee of experts to suggest suitable measures for planning and recruitment as per the admission  and academic schedule of IITs. The proposal The proposal cited that "quite a few candidates, after being admitted in IITs or other institutes, are picked up by some of the PSUs for placement based on their GATE scores. As a result, they desert their course and the seat remains vacant.

"Enhancing agricultural output and maximum possible value addition to agricultural output along with other allied earning opportunities in villages should be the primary focus in the context of rural development.
