A student of IIT, Roorkee, drowned in the Ganga river near Shivpuri in Rishikesh when he went to the riverside for a bath along with a group of friends, police said on Saturday.

Rajesh Kumar (24), an M Tech student, had arrived along with a group of 13 IIT students at Paradise Beach Camp at Shivpuri on Thursday evening. The group of students left for the riverside at noon on Saturday for a bath. While all other boys waded into the river, Rajesh climbed on to a rock and jumped into it.

His friends tried to warn him from going too far but he did not listen to them, Muni-ki-Reti police station SHO Rajendra Rawat who supervised the rescue operations said. He swam for nearly 50 metres downstream and then was swept away by the strong currents, he added.

Divers scoured the river in search of Rajesh for long but his body could not be recovered, he said. Rajesh was the son of Tripurari Sharma and hailed from Bhojpur district in Bihar, he said.
