The Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IIT-R) has inked an MoU with Switzerland-based multinational ABB to construct an operational smart electricity distribution network and management system (SDNMS) on its campus which will serve as a pilot project for the Centre's Smart Cities Mission.

The Memorandum of Understanding between the ABB and IIT-R  also includes the creation of a Smart Grids Resource Centre and joint R&D facilities in the field of efficient power generation and distribution with a focus on clean energy over the next five years, a statement by the Zurich-based company said.

“The project signed today serves as a proof of concept of using smart grids and intelligent automation to efficiently manage power distribution. It would make India’s vision of power to all a reality and ultimately realize ABB’s goal of building technology that runs the world without consuming the earth,” Sanjeev Sharma, Managing Director, ABB India, said.

Speaking about the MoU, Prof. Ajit Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Roorkee, said, “Concern for sustainability has always driven all major campus development related activities of IIT Roorkee, making us one of the pioneers in this space. IIT Roorkee has been harnessing solar energy not only for electricity generation but also for providing direct hot water to all its hostels and residences in the campus, and also carries out solar based cooking in the hostels.”

According to the MoU, ABB experts will provide inputs for the creation of an SDNMS simulation which will serve as a platform for testing new ideas and techniques for field trials before deployment. A joint R&D facility on campus, supported by ABB, will be created to tighten collaboration between academia and industry, the statement said.

The SDNMS in IIT-Roorkee is likely to lay the groundwork for smart power distribution system in smart cities. So far, 99 cities have been picked up under the Smart Cities project. Under the scheme, each city will get Rs 500 crore from the Centre for implementing various projects. An equal amount, on matching basis, will have to be contributed by the state or urban local bodies.

Smart grids are a cornerstone of the smart cities project as it can solve India's energy crisis to some extent. It will minimise the power theft and distribution losses. The collaboration of IIT-R and ABB could be a major factor in the development of smart grids for upcoming smart cities.

It's worth mentioning that ABB's electrification and automation systems power the world’s largest single-location solar project in Tamil Nadu. Its network management solutions is used in Karnataka to ensure power to 60 million people.
