The national-level engineering entrance exam, Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced 2016, was held smoothly in the city on Sunday, with as many as 1.56 lakh students across the country appearing for this competitive exam, meant for those who aspire to into the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Candidates can take a crack at JEE a maximum of two times, and hence many students who had appeared for this exam last year registered again for it this year.

JEE is divided into two different papers, and candidates have to attempt both Paper I and Paper II, with their results being judged on the basis of the average marks obtained by them in both the papers.

Vinay Kumar, CEO, Rao Academy, said: "Paper I of JEE Advanced 2016, which was held from 9am to 12noon, and Paper II, held from 2pm to 5pm, were difficult overall this time around. With negative marking even for multiple choice questions (MCQs), wherein two marks will be deducted for every incorrect MCQ answer, only added to the difficulties that the students faced. Mathematics was the toughest section of all, followed by physics. Chemistry was slightly on the easier side. In comparison with the last six to seven years, JEE Advance 2016 is being viewed to be the most difficult of these. So we are expecting much lower cut-offs this year."

Candidates who appeared for the exam said that, this time, the questions were of a moderately difficulty level, with physics and mathematics being tougher than chemistry.

Akshay Arora, an engineering aspirant, said: "This was my second attempt at cracking JEE and I didn't expect such difficult questions to be asked. The mathematics section in Paper I took comparatively more time than the Paper II sections. Overall, I found it quite difficult even though I was well prepared for the exam this time around."
