While the general atmosphere around the hallowed premises of one of the best B schools in India, the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) was one of abounding cheer on the convocation day, an unmistakable air of simmering wrath, however, hung behind its rectors' veil. The reason: A ploy to catch a flouter in his game.
And how it got even with the errant student is probably a management funda that will go down the annals of the premier B-school's history as the first of its kind. But as they say, all's well that ends well. And it did.

Little did that one student, among the 388 graduates, dressed in convocation paraphernalia and eager to receive their degrees after completing the two-year Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) in March this year, think, that all he will get is a blank paper in the decorated cover from chairman of IIMA, AM Naik, instead of the coveted certificate.

And if you thought it was a goof up from mecca of management studies, think again. This is how the institute killed two birds with one stone – got even with the student who dared to flout the set norms and also saw that he didn't lose face in public. The student was barred from receiving diploma on the convocation day as the faculties, mainly the placement coordinator, wanted to teach him some discipline for not completing his period of "punishment" within the imposed deadline.

"IIMA has set stringent norms for students not to share any placement related details with people outside institute -- be it media or recruiters. This student reportedly shared tentative dates for final placement with a few companies. Though his act may not have been intended to harm the institute, it tantamounted to flouting placement committee's norms. He was, therefore, given the punishment of working with the blind school for two months as part of community service," said a source close to development.

The student's act was taken with extreme seriousness by the authorities as many a time corporates start influencing students for jobs by sidelining the institute's placement cell. Considering it to be a serious act of irresponsibility on part the student, the management gurus therefore punished him with compulsory community service of two months.

However, the silver lining in the entire episode is that the errant student would receive his degree only after he completes his punishment. And thus, the authorities ensured that the student received his diploma only in the second week of April, sources close to IIMA told dna.

Confirming the incident, director of institute, Ashish Nanda said, "I had called an emergency meeting on the day of convocation to seek faculty's views on the matter. After consultation, we decided to allow him to be part of convocation procession, go on stage as his friends and family had come to be part of big day. But it was decided, he would get degree only after he completes his penalty," said Prof Nanda.
