BSP supremo Mayawati on Tuesday slammed Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad for inordinate delay in pending appointment of judges and the Modi government for ignoring and disrespecting the recommendations made by the Supreme Court Collegium.

"It was sad to note that ministers of the Central government have been saying that the Law Ministry will not act as mere 'Post Office' on every recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium. It is because of this attitude of the Centre that the country is facing an acute shortage of judges," she said.

Her jibe was aimed at Prasad who had recently stated that the Modi government respects the Collegium, but that does not mean it will act as a mere 'Post Office'.

"The Modi government boasts of appointing 126 judges, but they keep mum on the appointment of 300 judges recommended by the Collegium. If the Law Ministry is not a 'Post Office' then it should also not act as the 'Police Station'. Modi government should accept this and stop insulting the judiciary," countered Mayawati.

The BSP Supremo also charged that the Modi government with not giving adequate representation to Dalits, backward and minority communities in the judiciary. "They have not given adequate representation to Dalits, backwards and minorities in the Union Cabinet. It was wrong to expect from this government that they will post them in judiciary," she claimed, adding, "The Modi government's policies and mindset is not at all in the interest of the country. It will only promote communalism and casteism."
