Amidst mounting pressure from the cadre to take a tough line against Pakistan in the aftermath of Uri, BJP President Amit Shah has told party leaders that it was time for unwavering commitment to the party's core ideology which had brought it to power.

Shah neither mentioned Uri nor Pakistan, but the message to the party was crisp and clear– deliver on the promises not just in words and with no time to waste, according to sources. Shah was tracing the party's journey from the 1967 when Deendayal Upadhyay was elected Jan Sangh president, when he said the party's phenomenal growth since then was made possible because of its distinct ideology, according to the sources.

There is anticipation in the party that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is making his first public speech after the Uri attack at a rally here, will mention the issue and reflect the government's approach on it.

A day before the Prime Minister's address, party leaders evaded spelling out their stand on Uri, even as the issue loomed over the conclave. Shah is expected to reflect the party's view when he addresses the national council on Sunday, sources said.

BJP general secretary Ram Madhav, who held a press conference here, evaded questions on Uri saying it will be taken up at an appropriate time. "We are a party of grassroot workers. We understand this sentiment in the country. We get inputs from people. All important issues are raised at the right time and its essence will be conveyed to you," he said.

Asked if the party had toned down, he said "you want statement or action? Action will continue to happen. Wait and watch," he said. Madhav had made the "jaw for a tooth remark" within hours of the Uri attack.

Giving details of the party conclave, he said the national council dedicated to the ideas of integral humanism and antyodaya of Upadhyay, the ideological mentor of the Parivar, had set a new trend that a party meeting can be held for constructive thinking and not just for election.

Sources said at the meeting with party office bearers, Shah asked BJP-ruled states to ensure that the Modi regime's 80 schemes reach the last man in the queue within the centenary year of Deendayal Upadhyay, which begins on Sunday. Shah wants the organisation and government to focus on "garib Kalyan", they said.
