The Information and Broadcasting (I&B) ministry has written to all states, including Delhi, asking them to appoint a three-member committee to monitor government advertisements and to see if the content of such advertisements follow guidelines put forth by the Supreme Court.

The step comes after the Supreme Court, in a judgement in May this year, directed all states to appoint a committee to keep a tab on government advertisements.

The I&B ministry has already appointed a three-member committee headed by former chief election commissioner BB Tandon to monitor advertisements given out by central government ministries, PSUs and union territories. However, states had to appoint their own committees to oversee advertisements put out by their governments, as per the apex court order.

Among other states, the Delhi government has already initiated the process of appointing its committee, as per the Supreme Court's order.

The Aam Aadmi government has decided to form a three-member selection panel constitute the three-member committee for monitoring Delhi government advertisements.

The selection panel will be headed by principal secretary of Delhi urban development department Ramesh Negi and will comprise special secretary of Directorate of Information & Publicity Sandeep Mishra and journalist Pradeep Magazine and will be submitting their recommendation within two weeks.

The Delhi government had earlier drawn flak from opposition parties as well as the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India on its excess advertisement spend.

In May 2015, Supreme Court in its order had issued guidelines on Regulating Government Advertisements based on recommendations of Professor NR Madhava Menon Committee.
