Days after the Income-Tax (I-T) Department officials grilled the family members of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) President Lalu Prasad Yadav over alleged Benami deals and disproportionate assets, the taxmen have now slapped a notice on the party, seeking details of the source of funds spent on organising the August 27 anti-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) mega rally. According to sources, the I-T sleuths have asked the RJD to furnish details of the expenses incurred for the party's 'BJP Bhagao, Desh Bachao' rally.

RJD's Sunday rally had witnessed the presence of representatives from at least 17 political parties, including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, former Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav, rebel JDU leader Sharad Yadav, Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and C P Joshi, and lakhs of RJD supporters.

The preparations for the grand event were underway for the last several months. RJD leaders in the know said that the party pumped in huge resources to ensure that it was a success, especially after the fall of the Mahagathbandhan government in Bihar in July.

Earlier on August 29, the I-T sleuths had quizzed Lalu's wife and former Bihar CM Rabri Devi, son and ex-deputy CM Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, and daughter and MP Misa Bharti, in cases pertaining to disproportionate assets, Benami deals, and post-demonetisation transactions.

The RJD, however, was in the attack mode on Friday, with Tejashwi alleging that senior BJP leader and deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi turned his black money into white by using his brother's money laundering company. It may be recalled that it was Modi who made the allegations that the Yadav clan indulged in Rs 2,000 crore Benami deals, which ultimately led to the split in the Grand Alliance in Bihar.

"He has been hurling accusations at my family, but the truth is that Modi himself is the owner of Benami properties worth crores. His brother R K Modi is a big builder, who owns many shield companies, through which he bought a flat for Rs 14 lakh in 2006. It was sold at Rs 85 lakh in 2010, but the method of payment while buying the flat was not made clear," Tejashwi said.

In response, Modi said: "I had taken a loan of Rs 10 lakh and rest of the payment was made through a cheque. The details are present in my election affidavit and I am ready to reveal all my income sources. However, will Lalu be able give an account of the properties that the family has amassed during their regime in Bihar?"
