Income Tax officials on Friday night conducted a raid at late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa's residence in upscale Poes Garden and rooms used by her personal assistant.
According to sources, the searches were restricted to the rooms used by Jayalalithaa's personal assistant S Poongundran at Veda Nilayam.
Sources said that the searches were being conducted after getting permission from the court. The Adyar residence of Poongundran, one of the trusted aides of Jayalalithaa, was also searched as part of the raids. Poongundran was questioned for over 10 hours on Monday and appeared before I-T officials again on Friday, the source said, adding that the search at Poes Garden was connected to the documents recovered from his residence.
I-T officials, who ended their the five-day-long multi-city searches at 187 premises on Monday, claimed to have unearthed cash, valuables and documents related to undisclosed income calculated at approximately Rs 1,430 crore.
A senior I-T official said that they have seized electronic gadgets, including a laptop and storage devices from the Poes Garden. The search was launched following an intelligence input that some persons have conspired to covertly remove crucial evidence from Veda Nilayam, the official said.
The residences of Sasikala's husband M Natarajan in Thanjavur, her brother V Dhivaharan's residence and college in Manargudi in Tiruvarur district, Dinakaran's farmhouse in Villupuram, Illavarassi's daughter of Krishna Priya and her son Vivek Jayaraman were among the places searched by the I-T officials.
