Spelling a likely fresh trouble for Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)'s first family, the Income Tax (IT) department has asked the Bihar government to furnish details about the land deals executed by former Chief Minister Rabri Devi, deputy CM of Bihar Tejashwi Prasad Yadav and state health minister Tej Pratap Yadav "in connection with an ongoing enquiry."

The IT office in Patna has issued letters to the registrars in land registration offices in Patna and Danapur, requesting them to "forward details of all land deeds executed or registered in respect of - Lalu's sons Tej Pratap Yadav and Tejashwi Prasad Yadav and his wife Rabri Devi."

The information has been sought under section 131 (1A) of the Income Tax Act, 1961, which empowers competent authority to ask for production of books of accounts or other documents for the purpose of making any inquiry or investigation.

One of the letters sent to the Danapur Registry office, issued on June 17 by an assistant director rank officer headquartered in Patna, says, "The information is required URGENTLY in connection with the ongoing enquiry. Therefore you are requested to handover the copy of registry today itself (sic)."

The IT Department is conducting an inquiry into the alleged Benami deals of the family and has attached properties belonging to the Yadav clan in New Delhi and Patna.

Apart from Rabri and sons, the IT department has issued a separate letter, dated June 16, to the registrar in Danapur, asking him to "forward the details of all land deeds executed/registered in respect of AK Infosystems Private Limited, Amit Katyal, Rajesh Katyal and Laxman Sharma in connection with an ongoing enquiry." Citing urgency, the department asked the registrar to handover the relevant documents to the bearer of the letter.

AK Infosystems Private Limited is one of the alleged shell companies that was established by the Katyal family in 2006 to amass land for the Yadav family in exchange of facilitating them to set up a liquor factory here during Rabri Devi's rule. The company's 100 per cent shares, directorship and assets worth crores of rupees were transferred to Lalu's family in 2014.
