Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday took a dig at Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi and said that dynasty becomes a burden in the long run.

Jaitley's remark came days after Rahul Gandhi's comment on dynasty while addressing students at the University of California.

"I feel ashamed when it was said in the US that dynasty is in India's nature (Mujhe sharam aayi jab Amreeka mein baith ke kaha gaya ki parivarvaad is desh ke svabhaav mein hai)," Arun Jaitley said taking a dig at Rahul Gandhi.

"Some parties may think that being centered around dynasty is an asset but in the long run it becomes a burden," Jaitley added.

Hitting back at those who have accused him of reaping the benefits of 'dynasty politics', Rahul had said that the entire nation is running on it and hence, one should not go only after him. "Most parties in India have that problem So...Mr Akhilesh Yadav is a dynast. Mr Stalin (son of M Karunanidhi in DMK) is a dynast ... even Abhishek Bachchhan is a dynast."

Earlier, Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani slammed Rahul Gandhi's defense citing background of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind and Vice President Venkaiah Naidu.

When Rahul said that - That's how India runs - he forgot that in independent India there are many people who are giving contribution but have no political legacy. "Prime Minister comes from a small village, President is from a family that comes from the marginalised community. Vice President is a farmer's son. The three people being at the top post is a signal that in a living democracy merit is important. A failed dynast talked about his failed political journeys in US," Irani said in a scathing attack.

Gandhi who is in the US on a two-week-long tour has held a series of meetings, including a roundtable with eminent Indian /South Asia experts hosted by the Center for American Progress (CAP), a Democratic-leaning think tank.
