Former minister Amit Shah returned to the state recently after spending two years in exile because of a Supreme Court order in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case. A close aide of chief minister Narendra Modi, Shah is considered a master-strategist. His return to the state ahead of the assembly polls is important for the BJP.
Shah is the BJP candidate from Naranpura constituency, which is considered a bastion of the party. Besides campaigning in his constituency, Shah is also very involved in the party’s effort to register a huge victory in the elections.
He was instrumental in dislodging the Congress and putting BJP men in power in the co-operative banks, the dairy sector and finally in cricket bodies. However, in an interview to DNA’s Nikunj Soni, Shah said he was a mere worker of the BJP. Excerpts:
What in your view is your contribution to the BJP and, currently, what are you doing for the party?
I am just a worker of the party and doing everything as directed by the party, nothing more than that.
It is said that you have never lost in politics. Were you always successful?
It is not about defeat or victory. I am always successful because I work according to my strategy and my guts. Hence I get success.
You captured the dairy sector, the co-operative banks and the cricket bodies for the BJP from the Congress. First, it would not be proper to use a word like ‘capture’. I have always done things the democratic way and by winning the support of the people.
It is said you wrested control of these sectors by using threatening tactics as well as divide-and-rule strategy. I cannot threaten anybody as there is no Emergency-like situation in the state.
What about your involvement in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Tulsi Prajapati encounter cases?
I have been saying from the beginning that I have been falsely implicated in the case due to a conspiracy against me. I will put my arguments before the court. You will see that I will come out clean.
Due to the criminal cases, Narendra Modi is keeping a distance from you.
This is only the media’s imagination.
How do you view your and the BJP’s prospects in the polls?
The BJP will get two-thirds majority.
How did you and your family feel when you were arrested?
I don’t want to discuss such things with the media.
