Making it clear that neither is he dreaming of becoming the President of the country nor is it proper on his part to do so since his party has a cumulative number of only 14 MPs in the Parliament, NCP President Sharad Pawar said on Monday that if Prime Minister Narendra Modi takes a decision, the election for the post of President can be held without any opposition.

Locals in Solapur city and district felicitated Pawar for completing 50 years in public life as an elected representative. Speaking to the media after the event, Pawar said that he is often asked about whether he wants to become the President since the election for the post is being held. He said, "Being in politics for the past five decades, I know that a person with just 14 MPs in Parliament cannot become the President."

Pawar added that Modi has adequate numbers to win the Presidential election, but if the Prime Minister tries to bring about a consensus for this election by talking to other parties, he can carry out the process without any opposition.

Commenting on politics in Solapur district, Pawar admitted that the NCP unit there was riddled with factionalism. Pointing out that a few leaders from the party have defected, the party chief expressed confidence that the NCP would see a revival since it has a healthy number of followers in the district and in rural areas.

Pawar also advised farmers in Solapur to diversify into horticulture, saying that the district has the maximum number of sugar factories in the state and, due to shoddy water management, most of these factories are making losses. He said that he would speak to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and NABARD officials about reviving the sugar factories in the district.
