Newly-appointed CBI chief Anil Kumar Sinha said he was "acutely aware" of the challenges the agency faces and was committed to preserve its integrity, industry and impartiality on Wednesday.

Sinha has taken over the reins at a time when the agency is perhaps going through its toughest phase on credibility issues and is under direct scrutiny of the Supreme Court over shoddy handling of probe in coal allocation and 2G scams.

Sinha, 1979 IPS officer from Bihar cadre, has been with the agency as a Special Director for the past 21 months and supervised the Saradha chit fund probe and has a tough task cut out to restore the credibility of the CBI.
A student of prestigious Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, suave and soft-spoken Anil Sinha is also known for his eloquence in English among IPS officers.

He gave a glimpse of it when he told media in the context of Saradha scam on Wednesday that they should have read the full statement, especially the last line carefully.

Explaining his priorities after taking over, Sinha said, "There is no challenge which is small or big...The challenges are an opportunity to do Good. I accept the responsibility to head the premier investigation agency with deep humility."

Keeping himself out from any controversial issue, Sinha said, "I am aware of the challenges faced by CBI and would endeavour to work with my team to strengthen the cause of justice and reiterate our commitment to the values enshrined in the motto of the organisation ie industry, impartiality and integrity."

Sinha's name was agreed upon by the PM Modi led three member collegium with Chief Justice of India HL Dattu and leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjuna Kharge being the other two members. Sinha has served in several important positions including in anti-corruption and vigilance wing in Bihar before joining as Additional Secretary in the Central Vigilance Commission.

He joined the CBI in May 2013 where he supervised the Saradha chit-fund scam probe among other major cases. He is supervising several zones of the agency such as anti-corruption, economic offences, special crimes, STF and MDMA.

He was awarded a Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2000 and the President's Police Medal for distinguished service in 2006. He served on central deputation from 1998 to 2005 in Special Protection Group (SPG) as DIG and thereafter as IG engaged in the protection of the Prime Minister and other SPG protectees.
