As mixed reactions pour in over the encounter of all four accused in the Hyderabad gangrape and murder case by the Telangana police, another related fact has come to light which has taken the context by storm. It has been reported that VC Sajjanar, the Commissioner of Police, Cyberabad, who was in charge of investigating the case, was also involved in another similar 'encounter' in Warangal, undivided Andhra Pradesh, 11 years ago.

According to reports, Sajjanar, back in 2008, was the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Warangal. A case of an acid attack against two women that year had led Sajjanar, who was in charge of investigating the case, and his team on the hunt for the three accused - S Srinivas (25), D Sanjay (22) and P Harikrishna (24). While the women were still admitted at a private hospital in Hyderabad recuperating with the injuries, it was reported that the police team headed by Sajjanar had killed all three accused in an 'encounter'. Even a press release later released by Sajjanar and his police team shed light on the fact that the cops had taken the three accused to Mamnoor, in the outskirts of Warangal, where they, the police claimed, had attempted to attack the cops with country-made weapons and acid bottles that they had kept hidden from prior. Thereafter, the police said, all three accused were killed in the encounter.

Since a similar sequence of events can be traced 11 years later in Hyderabad, the parallels with the 2008 encounter are not unnoticed in public memory, especially since the top cop behind both the encounters are reportedly one and the same, VC Sajjanar. Certain members of civil society have claimed that the police, by taking the accused to Shadnagar on Friday morning without media's knowledge and conducting the encounter thereafter, have actually displayed a predilection for 'taking law into their own hands'. However, several others have also celebrated the act by claiming that it was swift delivery of justice in a highly sensitive case, where the due process would have kept the accused unpunished for a long time. Even protesters demanding 'Justice for Disha (the name given to the Hyderabad vet to protect her identity)' supported the act of 'justice', along with her family.

All four accused in the Hyderabad gangrape and murder case were killed in an encounter by the Telangana Police in an encounter in the wee hours of Friday. "The accused Mohammed Arif, Naveen, Shiva and Chennakeshavulu were killed in a Police encounter at Chatanpally, Shadnagar today in the wee hours, between 3 AM and 6 AM. I have reached the spot and further details will be revealed," Cyberabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar later said.
