Hardline Hurriyat Conference chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani was put under house arrest today soon after he returned home from the national capital. "Soon after Geelani returned from New Delhi, he was arrested by police at Srinagar airport and kept under house arrest at his residence," a spokesman of the Hurriyat said.
A police team had been stationed outside the main gate of Geelani's residence to restrict his movement, he said. "Police have not presented any court order in this regard," the spokesman said.
Police refused to comment on the Hurriyat spokesman's claim.
The development comes on the day the Election Commission announced the schedule for Lok Sabha elections to be held over nine phases in April-May this year.
Geelani has already called for a boycott of the elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
