The independent MLA from Langate, Sheikh Abdul Rasheed aka Engineer Rasheed, on Wednesday released a video showing senior Hurriyat leaders — Bilal Gani Lone and Abdul Gani Bhat — rubbing shoulders with newly-elected Sarpanchs and former militant commanders, during a function to commemorate the death anniversary of Mirwaiz Mohammad Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone at Langate.

“It is proof that they want to contest the elections in 2014. In their speeches, some of the sarpanches made it clear that they want to overthrow zalims (tyrants) from Kupwara, Langate and others, which means they want to remove the MLAs, which can only be done by contesting polls. Plus, newly-elected sarpanches were addressing people from the Hurriyat stage,” said Engineer Rasheed.

Rasheed advised the Hurriyat to end the clandestine campaign and come out openly if they want to contest polls. “Some (Hurriyat leaders) had said in the past that contesting elections tantamount to betrayal. Some gave the poll boycott call. Even in 2002, the Hurriyat had split on the elections issue,” he said.

Rasheed said contesting elections is not a sin. “I would welcome if they (Hurriyat leaders) join the poll fray, provided they believe Kashmir is a dispute-pending resolution and UN resolutions are the basis for solving this vexed issue,” he said.

Rasheed also identified the people in the video who, he said, are planning to contest the polls. “Some of the people who were part of the function were the polling agents of Sajjad lone, when he contested parliament polls, which he eventually lost. Some are surrendered militants-turned-mainstream leaders who are being projected as potential candidate for 2014 polls,” he said.

Engineer Rasheed asked Mirwaiz to explain why these mainstream leaders were part of the separatist function.  “I want to ask Mirwaiz who are these people and what role do they have in a rally organised by the Hurriyat conference,” he said.

Senior Hurriyat leader Bilal Lone, who had organised the function, rubbished the allegations saying he does not want to comment on the silly things. “It was my father’s anniversary anybody could come. Plus I don’t want to comment on these silly things,” he said.
