Both infants were sold to a Porbandar couple for Rs8 lakh.
Dr Bharat Atit, husband of former BJP mayor Malini Atit and accused in human trafficking case, is guilty of selling not one but two infants. In a press conference on Thursday, joint commissioner of police AK Sharma said that Atit had sold the infants to a Porbandar-based doctor couple for Rs8 lakh. This is the first case in India where a doctor is involved in a human trafficking case.
Official sources revealed that one of the infants belonged to Mona Thakor, and the cops will soon take her into custody. However, they are still looking for the biological mother of the second baby.
During investigation, police conducted a medical test of the infants after which it came to light that the couple had adopted the babies from Atit. The doctor had even prepared fake documents for the procedure. The couple said that they approached Atit when all their attempts to have a baby failed. They had seen his advertisement in a newspaper.
Under Atit’s medical supervision, they tried various means, but all their attempts failed. Finally, they decided to adopt kids from him. Investigation revealed that they had lied to their relatives about having twins.
After striking a deal with the couple, Atit paid Rs1, 65,000 to Thakor, Rs35,000 to the doctor who treated Thakor and Rs25,000 to the nurse who is also one of the accused.
“We are trying to find out if Atit took the help of any other doctors in Mumbai or Ahmedabad. He would frequently visit Mumbai, hence we suspect that involvement of more people in this racket,” said
Himanshu Shukla, DCP.
To evade arrest, Atit had sent an application to the high court, stating that he would co-operate with the police. However, the cops said that Atit was not at all co-operative during the interrogation period that started from January 26 and will be on till February 4. Police will now submit Atit’s investigation report in the
Gujarat High Court.
Earlier, Atit had also sent an application in the sessions court asking for bail, however the plea was rejected.
