The victory of BJP candidate from Deoband assembly constituency, that hosts 65% Muslim population shows the depth of BJP president Amit Shah's deft social engineering to neutralise opposition. BJP's Brijesh Kumar won this seat by security 102244 votes with the help of consolidation of Gujjar, Rajput and Jat votes. Muslim vote here got divided between Majid Ali of BSP who got 72844 and Mavia Ali of Samajwadi Party (SP) who secured 55383 votes.
Deoband is also home to Darul Uloom, one of the most important and influential schools of Islamic Studies in the world. It is best known all over the world for contribution of great Islamic scholars and authorities of Islamic jurisprudence and also for the centre of publication of books and publishing houses. The adjoining areas of Deoband have a large number of relics and host of madrassas and schools.
