Anger has swept across the Kashmir valley after a hostel warden thrashed underprivileged tribal girl students injuring over a dozen, six of them seriously at the Gujjar and Bakerwal hostel Srinagar.

Police have registered a case against the warden, Dr Shabnum, while the director of school education Kashmir, Dr Shah Faesal, has placed her under suspension pending enquiry.

The incident occurred on Thursday evening when Dr Shabnum asked the minor students to mop the floors and clean the rooms, including a dining hall. Students' alleged that the warden thrashed more than dozen students by a stick. Eight girls received wounds; two of them suffered fractures in their arms.

"Warden ma'am asked the girls why we they did not go to school. Since examination of class VIII was starting today so they were doing preparations. But she did not listen and thrashed us ruthlessly. Earlier she asked the girls to clean the rooms," said Shahida Noor, class X student from Harwan.

Terrified, the girls, all in the age group of 14 to 16 years, were groaning with pain through the night, though they were given first aid by resident doctor. In the morning they narrated the tale of woes to the principal of Government Girls Higher Secondary School Raj Bagh who in turn informed the police and also took the injured to the hospital for treatment.

"The students were busy preparing for examination when warden asked them to clean her room. They said they have exams tomorrow and they would do it later. She became furious and thrashed them ruthlessly. Six students were seriously injured. Two of them suffered fractures while four are admitted in SMHS hospital. Eight others have got minor wounds," said Mohammad Amin, principal of Government Girls Higher Secondary School Raj Bagh.

Police have registered a case against the warden but she has not been arrested so far. "Look how influential she is that she has not been arrested despite a case registered against her," said Amin.

Sensing trouble, director of school education Shah Faesal placed Dr Shabnum under suspension pending inquiry and attached her with the chief education office Ganderbal.
